Count Extra-Curricular Activities in the University Admission Process

A human being is more than just his academics. I believe that academics are just a very crude measurement for judging one’s capabilities, especially concerning school education where one might be spread too thin within multiple subjects and topics to be good at everything. For me, it was really hard to be good enough at topics that were not of much interest to me on top of being exceptional at one particular thing. For many such students like me, it is often one or the other. The selection process of our universities is so narrowed down that we are robbing a huge pool of students of the opportunity to prove themselves. This is where extracurricular activities come in.

When an individual is passionate about something like coding, debate, music, or olympiads like math or physics, a university can’t judge that individual’s merit just by academics. And what happens when you misjudge a meritorious student? You destroy their potential by measuring them with the same scale as everyone else. Albert Einstein has put it correctly, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The inclusion of Extracurricular Activities into the Bangladeshi admission process is the only way universities can unlock and measure students’ true potential.

This issue has been already discussed in the Open Editorial (OpEd) of top dailies like The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune. Bangladeshi students from the world's different top-tier universities like Harvard, Stanford, MIT as well as medalists in different international olympiads like International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), International Astronomy Olympiad, International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) and International Math Olympiad (IMO) supported this cause.
